Who We Are and What We Do

We are Prison Resistance Project at the University of Maryland, College Park, a group of student-activist prison abolitionists. We advocate for a world where putting people in prisons is no longer normalized as a legitimate response to societal problems, which are instead addressed in truly humane and effective ways.

Abolition, as Ruth Wilson Gilmore says, is not just about the absence of prisons, but the presence of meaningful societal programs which address why wrongdoing occurs, how we can transform society to prevent it, and how can we respond to it in ways which foster healing rather than further violence (i.e. by putting people in prison).

Abolition does not stop at the criminal legal system. We stand with all oppressed peoples across the globe and advocate for global justice, whether that in be in the form of responding to the threats of the climate crisis, elevating the rights of migrants, or fighting for the freedom of Palestinian people.

On this site we will be writing about activist projects that we are working on, as well as about prison abolition in general. Make sure to subscribe so that you can find out when we post new stuff!
